The WCPA Legacy

Windy City Performing Arts (WCPA) was incorporated in 1983 as an independent not-for-profit umbrella organization for Windy City Gay Chorus, Aria: Windy City Women’s Ensemble, Unison: Windy City Lesbian and Gay Singers, and Windy City Slickers (on hiatus).

Each ensemble in WCPA performs a variety of musical styles from classical to pop. We pride ourselves on musical excellence regardless of the style of music. The choruses have a history of performing major works and have even had pieces commissioned especially for the ensemble.

In September 2003, the performing ensembles of WCPA made history by becoming the first choruses in a Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgendered (GLBT) organization to sing the National Anthem at an Illinois professional sporting event, at the Chicago Free Press sponsored “Out At The Ballgame” day at U.S. Cellular Field, opening for the Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Indians game.

As the Windy City Performing Arts Mission Statement reads:

Windy City Performing Arts exists to create, nurture and maintain performing arts ensembles of the highest level of artistic quality for the purposes of fostering gay and lesbian pride, promoting understanding and compassion for GLBT people, and reaching out to touch the lives of GLBT and mainstream audiences through musical excellence.
